Tasmania has secured a major coup ahead of the club’s entry into the AFL in 2028, with former NRL star Ryan Papenhuyzen committing to the Devils on a two-year deal.
Widely regarded as one of rugby league’s most electrifying talents, Papenhuyzen will join the Devils’ VFL program in 2027, before transitioning to the AFL list in 2028.
The 27-year-old played 113 games for the Melbourne Storm in the NRL, where he achieved Premiership success in 2020, earning the Clive Churchill Medal.
Devils CEO Brendon Gale said Papenhuyzen’s signature reflects the club’s bold approach as it continues to shape its inaugural AFL list.
“Ryan is an elite athlete with a competitive edge and professionalism that will add enormous value to our program,” Gale said.
“The opportunity for him to develop through our VFL side in 2027 gives both Ryan and the club the time and support needed to make a successful transition into the AFL environment.”
Papenhuyzen said the move presents an exciting new challenge at this stage of his career.
“The chance to test myself in a new code and be part of something from the ground up with Tasmania was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” Papenhuyzen said.
“The Devils are building something special and I’m looking forward to learning the game, developing my skills and living in a warmer climate.”
