The Devils carry impressive form into Sunday’s clash with Sandringham at Trevor Barker Beach Oval as they look to consolidate their position in the VFL’s top four.
The Devils have won their past two matches against AFL aligned sides North Melbourne and Richmond, further fueling confidence within a squad that is continuing to gel with every performance.
“We’ve shown consistency that our game does stack up against most clubs,” Devils’ livewire Brandon Leary said.
Leary, who was a dominant force with North Launceston prior to joining the Devils, is one of several local talents who have shone stepping up to a higher standard this season.
When Tasmania beat Sandringham by 26-points in round six, he took three spectacular marks that were replayed and discussed on prominent AFL programs across the country.
“It was something I was pretty proud of,” Leary said.
“Taking the first one pretty early got my confidence up and then it just felt like I could probably go for anything and fly at whatever.
“But then you look at last week, I attempted one and got nowhere near it and got called for a free kick so it’s just how it works sometimes.”
The step up to the VFL has come at just the right time for 23-year-old Leary, reinvigorating his passion to pursue an opportunity at the highest level.
In recent weeks, he’s spent more time in the midfield, playing a crucial role in the final quarter against North Melbourne a fortnight ago as the Devils came from behind to win by 14-points.
“It has been really good to learn off the Jye Menzie’s of the world and Caleb Mitchell, who obviously have AFL experience, and young Harry Elmer as well who has put a really good season together,” Leary said.
“[The VFL] has sort of changed my outlook on footy… It definitely has resparked that love for it and knowing that there is a higher level again – just being aspirational I suppose is what has come from it.”
Tasmania’s women will also face Sandringham this Saturday in a clash preceding the VFL fixture.
Experienced midfielder Libby Haines says players are bringing a positive approach and strong connections are forming as they strive for their inaugural win.
“We are definitely improving every game and we are showing good signs in our football,” Haines said.
The Devils have received a huge boost with former Tasmanian under 18 captain Candice Belbin set to make her VFLW debut after overcoming an injury interrupted start to the season.
Belbin, from Ulverstone, spent last season playing with Norwood in the SANFLW.
“I’ve played with her at club level and won a couple of flags with her too and she is a great player and I think she can bring a lot to our team, so I’m very excited to watch her play,” Haines said.
The VFLW match between Tasmania and Sandringham gets underway at 10:05am on Sunday, while the VFL clash begins at 1:05pm.
