Tasmania was unable to contain a strong Geelong outfit, falling by 42 points at Deakin University on Sunday morning.
Played in cool, partly cloudy conditions, the Cats controlled much of the contest through possession, field position and defensive pressure, recording an 8.12 (60) to 3.0 (18) victory.
Geelong made a fast start, with Jasmin Stewart opening the scoring inside the first minute before Nikita Harris added another major.
Tasmania responded through Ava Read midway through the quarter, but the Cats maintained the early ascendancy and took a 2.2 (14) to 1.0 (6) lead into the first break.
The Cats continued to dominate territory in the second term.
A series of behinds kept the scoreboard ticking over before Faith Qoon added Geelong’s third goal of the match.
Tasmania worked hard defensively but was unable to register a score for the quarter, and Geelong extended its advantage to 3.7 (25) to 1.0 (6) at half-time.
The contest opened up after the main break as Geelong capitalised on its opportunities.
Goals to Sienna Tallariti, Faith Qoon and Lucy Marescuk helped the Cats establish a commanding lead.
Tasmania again battled hard around the contest but struggled to generate forward entries, remaining on one goal to three-quarter time.
At the final change, Geelong led 6.10 (46) to 1.0 (6).
Tasmania showed greater fight in the final quarter and added two late goals through Grace White and Ava Read.
However, Geelong continued to pressure the Devils and found further majors through Isabella Davies and Simone Nalder to seal a comprehensive victory.
Across the contest, Geelong’s territorial dominance was reflected in the numbers.
The Cats finished with 294 disposals to Tasmania’s 218, generated 47 inside-50 entries to 22 and won the clearance battle 28 to 21.
Geelong also applied relentless defensive pressure, recording 104 tackles.
Ava Read was Tasmania’s primary attacking threat, kicking two goals and providing a focal point in the forward half.
Grace White added the Devils’ other major, while Perri King worked tirelessly through the midfield with 22 disposals.
Gabbi Featherson also battled hard with 13 disposals, while Angelica Clark recorded seven clearances.
Taia Lette contributed strongly in the ruck with 17 hit-outs, while Sarah Skinner, Alicia Gordon and Emma Suckling continued to work hard around the ground despite the result.
For Geelong, Faith Qoon was the only multiple goal scorer with two majors, while Davies, Harris, Marescuk, Nalder, Stewart and Tallariti all contributed a goal each.
Mekah Morrissy, Lucy Marescuk and Isabella Davies were influential through the midfield, while Renee Morgan and Kate Surman helped apply consistent pressure around the contest.
The result reflected Geelong’s control of possession and territory throughout the match, with Tasmania unable to generate enough forward opportunities to consistently challenge the Cats on the scoreboard.
The Devils will look to regroup as they continue their inaugural VFLW campaign, turning their attention to a clash against the Casey Demons at Casey Fields next weekend.
