The Tasmania Devils are eyeing their second win on the mainland when they travel to Victoria for this weekend’s clash with Werribee.
Fresh from their 26-point victory over Sandringham in Launceston, the third-placed Devils are hunting their fifth win of the season against a Tigers outfit that sits eleventh with three wins and three losses.
“We are four and one so you would take that in a heart beat if you had told us that in pre-season that was how we were going to start the year,” Devils’ vice captain Jye Menzie said.
“It’s pretty difficult sometimes when you’ve got blokes travelling from north, north west as well – but I think the buy-in has been great.”
Menize believes interstate trips are extremely valuable for the team as players continue to strengthen relationships and chemistry.
“It gels the group a bit more, you build that cohesion which correlates to, hopefully, on-field performance,” he said.
“I know the boys always love travelling away, especially going to Melbourne.”
When the Devils last traveled interstate, in round three, they produced an outstanding display beating the Dolphins at Frankston by 78-points.
“We probably didn’t expect to go down there and roll them how we did and so convincingly,” Menzie said.
“The crowd numbers were crazy. Even some of the Frankston boys couldn’t believe how many Tassie supporters were there.”
Menzie, who played 47 games and kicked 36 goals for Essendon, has shone with his on-field performances this season.
The 23-year-old received the ten coaches’ votes in the Devils’ win over Sandringham on Sunday in a well-rounded game that included three goals, 24-disposals and ten tackles.
Menzie, who still harbours ambitions of a return to the AFL, has enjoyed the opportunity to play in the midfield for Tasmania this season.
“I think it’s just enabled me to get around the ball more, which obviously at Essendon I didn’t think I really got that opportunity to go up, get around the ball and show what I can do,” Menzie said.
“So now I’m really enjoying that role. I’m able to come out of myself a bit more, I’m able to help others around me but then I obviously love going forward as well and plying my trade up there.
“I’m hungrier than ever to prove people wrong and more importantly to prove myself right that I am more than capable of playing at AFL level.”
Saturday’s game against Werribee starts at 1:05pm and can be streamed on Kayo and the AFL website. The radio call of the match is available via SEN Tassie.
