Tasmania VFL star Jaxon Artemis is AFL bound after being selected by Essendon with the first pick in Tuesday’s AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft.
The rebounding defender has enjoyed a standout debut campaign in the VFL, forging a reputation as one of Tasmania’s most influential players with his impact off half back.
Overlooked in the draft last year, Artemis enjoyed premiership success with South Fremantle last season before relocating to Tasmania to take up an opportunity with the Devils in 2026.
The 19-year-old averaged 19.2 disposals from his six matches for the Devils, registering 27 possessions and a goal against Werribee in what would turn out to be his final appearance for Tasmania.
“It’s a bittersweet feeling to be leaving Tasmania, it genuinely feels like a family,” Artemis said.
“I wouldn’t be in the position I am today without the Devils, and I’ll always be grateful for the support, belief and opportunity they’ve given me to pursue my AFL dream.”
Tasmania’s Head of Football Operations, Aaron Pidgeon, said the club was delighted to see Artemis get his opportunity at AFL level.
“We couldn’t be happier for Jaxon,” Pidgeon said.
“He’s obviously a fantastic player but he’s an even better person and we know he’ll continue to flourish in an AFL environment.
“We thank Jaxon for his contribution to our football club and wish him and his family very best in what is an extremely exciting next chapter for them.”
