Tasmania has farewelled Jaxon Artemis and Max Mapley after the duo was selected in Tuesday’s AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft.
Highly-touted to go early on Tuesday night, Artemis didn’t have to wait long for his name to be called, selected by Essendon with the very first pick.
The rebounding defender enjoyed a standout debut campaign in the VFL, forging a reputation as one of Tasmania’s most influential players with his impact off half back.
The 19-year-old averaged 19.2 disposals from his six matches for the Devils, registering 27 possessions and a goal against Werribee in what would turn out to be his final appearance for Tasmania.
Artemis wasn’t the only player to depart the Devils VFL program with emerging ruckman Max Mapley also getting his opportunity at AFL level after he was selected by Melbourne with pick 19.
Mapley, a mobile 202cm ruckman, has averaged 18.1 hitouts, 4.4 tackles and 11.7 disposals per game for Tasmania this season, showcasing his versatility across the ground.
Tasmania’s Head of Football Operations, Aaron Pidgeon, declared it was a successful night for both the Devils and the VFL.
“Tonight was a fantastic reflection of the strength of our program and the quality of talent coming through the VFL system,” Pidgeon said.
“To see Jaxon and Max rewarded with AFL opportunities is something everyone at the Devils should be proud of, and it also highlights the important role the VFL continues to play in developing elite footballers.
“They’ll always be recognised as foundation players of our football club and we’ll continue to support them through this exciting next chapter, both on and off the field.”
