The Tasmania Devils have their sights set on another win over an AFL club’s VFL side this Saturday when they welcome Richmond to Launceston’s UTAS Stadium.

The Devils produced a superb final quarter display against North Melbourne last round, climbing to seventh on the ladder with a 14-point win.

Small forward Jed Hagan was instrumental kicking four goals – three in the last quarter.

“Our leg speed is probably our biggest strength and it’s a credit to the high performance staff, our ability to run out the game,” Hagan said.

“Our hunt, our defensive energy, our contest stuff really came into it late.”

Hagan, who was recruited from East Fremantle, is working as a teacher’s aid at Brighton Primary School.

Students are heavily invested in his weekend performances, having embraced the Devils in big numbers.

“You get to school and they have all been to the game and they are watching it, which is awesome, so that has been pretty cool to see,” Hagan said.

Hagan and his teammates will relish the chance to go up against the Tigers, who have three wins for the season and sit 18th on the ladder.

“If we’re not on with our defence, the AFL sides will just tear you apart from the contest and then they will go from there,” he said.

“It’s just exciting for our group to keep testing ourselves against the best players.

“As we have seen across the year our best footy is enough to beat anyone so hopefully we can go well.”

Tasmania’s women will also have a keen emphasis on the defensive side of their game in Saturday’s clash with Darebin, which follows the VFL fixture at UTAS Stadium.

After competitive performances against Casey and Port Melbourne in their opening two games, the Devils were soundly beaten by the premiers of the past two seasons, North Melbourne.

“This week will definitely be a core focus on our defence and ability to win more one on ones,” Devils’ coach Georgia Walker said.

“We’ve had [weekly] changes positionally and from a selection point of view as well so we are still looking for that right dynamic.“The best part is they are keen to learn and they are very competitive individuals and they want that success.”

While the Devils are acclimatising to the demands of the VFLW, Darebin has a rich history of winning premierships and producing star players including Australian Football Hall of Fame member Daisy Pearce.

“What that club has done to pave the way for where the [AFLW] competition is now is incredible,” Walker said.

“We are both fighting for our first win so we can’t expect it to be easy at all. It will be a really good challenge.”

The VFL game is scheduled for 12:05pm on Saturday, while the VFLW clash follows at 3:35pm.

Both games will be shown on Seven Tasmania and via 7Plus. SEN Tassie will be broadcasting the action on the radio.
