Applications are open for the 2027 Blundstone Tasmania Academy of Leadership in Sport (TALS), giving aspiring sports industry professionals the opportunity to learn, build connections and gain practical experience alongside Tasmania’s top sporting organisations.

Building Tasmania’s AFL club takes a team of people working around the team, across membership, retail, marketing, operations, community and more.

For students interested in those careers, TALS offers a chance to discover what happens behind the scenes, and develop the skills and network to contribute.

Developed in partnership with TasTAFE and delivered by the Devils’ TALS team, the program combines diplomas in Leadership and Management and Sport, with face-to-face learning in Hobart and Launceston, regular industry speakers and 100 hours of work-integrated learning.

With 2027 enrolments underway, prospective students and their families are invited to attend an upcoming information event in Hobart or Launceston to meet the team and explore the program.

Learning Alongside The Devils

Through its connection with the Tasmania Devils and other sporting partners, TALS brings students closer to the people, projects and experiences that shape the industry.

For current student Azar, the program has opened his eyes to where his passion could lead.

“I’ve always loved sport and footy. TALS got me really excited about a possible career working in sport,” Azar said.

One standout experience was photographing the Devils’ ANZAC Day night game against Carlton.

“There were about sixteen thousand people. Just being able to walk on the field and take photos of the crowd and players was such an amazing experience.”

The students’ contribution has also made a lasting impression within the club.

“There is no doubt over the last two years that this club wouldn’t be where it is without TALS,” Kath McCann, Devils Chief Marketing Officer said.

“The students have played an active role in delivering events and activities all across the state. Importantly, they have driven us and helped us to aspire to be the very best we can be.”

For graduate Rachel, TALS helped demonstrate the value of building connections.

“TALS really highlighted the importance of your networks, not only the people you work with, but the broader community,” she said.

After completing the course in 2025, Rachel took on a full-time role in the club’s retail team. She has since transitioned to Membership Team Leader, helping connect supporters with Tasmania’s club.

Her story shows how the skills, experience and relationships developed through TALS can help students take their next step into employment.

The program also provides a pathway to higher study. Graduates of the 1-year program can receive 18-months of credit towards the University of Tasmania’s Bachelor of Business, building on their TALS qualifications through a nation leading accelerated university pathway.

Real Projects & A Pathway To University

TALS UTAS students have contributed to projects spanning team song and mascot development, research, data and social impact, giving their learning a practical connection to the Club’s development.

Whether the goal is employment, further study or discovering a direction, TALS helps students build the skills, experience and connections to move forward.
